How Our Dermatologists Reach a Diagnosis
Most skin diagnoses are clinical, meaning the doctor looks at the lesion, its distribution, and its history. Where that is not enough, we use skin biopsy, patch testing for contact allergy, potassium hydroxide (KOH) examination for fungal infection, Wood’s lamp examination, and blood tests for conditions with a systemic cause.
This matters because several common conditions imitate each other. Tinea corporis and eczema both give an itchy red patch, but the treatment for one worsens the other. Psoriasis and seborrhoeic dermatitis both scale on the scalp. A correct diagnosis at the first visit saves months.
Treatment Options
Depending on the condition, treatment may include topical medication, oral medication, phototherapy, intralesional injection, chemical peels, or minor surgery. Our dermatosurgery service handles excision of cysts and moles, skin biopsy, and nail procedures.
On the cosmetology side, our consultants with cosmetic dermatology training manage pigmentation, acne scarring, and aging-related concerns. These treatments belong in a hospital setting where the practitioner holds a medical degree, because chemical peels and injectables carry real complications in untrained hands.
A note on steroid creams: potent topical steroids applied to the face or used long-term thin the skin, cause visible blood vessels, and trigger steroid-induced acne. Bring whatever you have been using to your appointment so the doctor can see it.
