A broken bone heals whether or not it is set correctly. That is the problem. A fracture left in a poor position still reforms, and the patient lives afterwards with a limb that is short, angled, or stiff and with a joint that wears out early.

Orthopedic surgery is about getting bone and joint back to the right position and holding it there while it heals. Apollo Imperial Hospitals runs Orthopedics and Trauma with four consultants and a dedicated orthopedic operation theater inside a complex of 14 theaters.

Fracture and trauma care

Our orthopedic trauma team works with C-arm imaging, a mobile X-ray unit that gives the surgeon live pictures during the operation. This is what allows a fracture to be reduced and fixed in the correct position under direct view. The position is confirmed as the work happens, not after the patient leaves the theater.

The team performs all types of fracture repair, including dynamic hip screw (DHS) fixation for hip fractures in older patients and laminectomy for spinal decompression.

Hip fracture in an elderly patient is a surgical emergency in all but name. Prolonged bed rest brings pneumonia, pressure sores, and clots, so early fixation is what gets the patient standing again.

Our emergency department includes a dedicated trauma, procedure, and cast room for road traffic accidents and other injuries and is open 24 hours.

Joint replacement

Hip Replacement

We regularly perform hip and knee replacement. The operation is for patients whose joint has been destroyed by osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or avascular necrosis and whose pain no longer responds to medication, weight management, and physiotherapy.

Patients usually ask two questions.

The first is how long a replaced joint lasts, and the honest answer is that most modern knee and hip replacements function well for 15 to 20 years, though this depends on age, weight, and activity.

The second is when they will walk, and most patients are walking with support within a day or two of surgery, since early mobilization is part of the recovery plan.

For more information about recovery after knee replacement, including walking, physiotherapy, and exercises, read the NHS guide to recovering from a knee replacement.

Arthroscopy

Arthroscopic surgery uses small incisions and a camera inside the joint. It treats meniscal tears, cruciate ligament injuries, shoulder impingement, rotator cuff tears, and cartilage damage. Recovery is faster than open joint surgery, and for sports injuries in young patients it is usually the right approach.

What supports the operation

Orthopedic implants are foreign material, so infection in a replaced joint is a serious complication. Our Infection Control Department and Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) handle sterilization and surveillance across the theater complex.

Postoperative patients who need monitoring go to our Surgical ICU within a 66-bed critical care department. Our physiotherapy and orthopedic rehabilitation service runs the rehabilitation that helps determine how well a replaced or repaired joint functions.
